  • As a constituent interested in endocrinology, endocrine science, and diabetes, I urge you to pass legislation that will lower the price and consumer cost of insulin as soon as possible. The sky-rocketing price of this medication has made it unaffordable for the millions of Americans whose health depends on it. Congress must act now to address this crisis.

As you may know, insulin is a lifesaving drug for people with diabetes. For all people living with type 1 diabetes, insulin is the only option and must be taken for life. Over 7 million people in the United States use insulin to control their blood sugar and avoid life-changing complications such as dialysis, heart disease, and amputation. However, the price of insulin has nearly tripled in the past 15 years, and it is simply unaffordable for many of the people who rely on it. For some, high costs mean forgoing or rationing their prescribed insulin. Uncontrolled or mismanaged diabetes can result in serious health complications with higher costs and, in some cases, death. Patients with uncontrolled diabetes are also at an increased risk for severe complications from COVID-19.

I commend the work that the Energy & Commerce Committee, the Senate Finance Committee,  and other committees have done to shed light on this issue. Though there has been a widespread acknowledgment that access to affordable insulin is a serious problem, the cost remains high and Americans living with diabetes continue to suffer. There are many policy options Congress could employ ranging from allowing government negotiation of price to other policies that would love out-of-pocket costs such as eliminating deductibles and cost-sharing and rebate reform.

I urge you to work with your colleagues to address this issue and find a solution that can be passed because people with diabetes cannot afford to wait any longer for help.

    Thank you.

  • Thank you for standing up for diabetics, we need it.
